Find and download free music. Websites like Royalty Free Music offer music that is free and legal to download. However, if you want more modern music, check out ad-supported site Spiral Frog, which has numerous Top 40 hits available for free download.
Transfer your new files to your iTunes library. Go to the file menu and then select "Add file to library" from the menu. A new "Browse" window will pop up. Select the folder where you put your free music and then click "OK." Your songs will then appear in iTunes.
Sync your iPod. If you have auto-sync enabled, new files will be added to your iPod as soon as it is connected to your computer. However, if you manually sync your iPod, you will need to drag each file individually onto the iPod icon for them to sync.
Although music for your iPods generally comes from a CD you already own, or is bought from the iTunes service, you can still put songs that you have downloaded from free services onto your iPod by adding them to your iTunes library. The process is fairly simple, and is ideal for fans of independent, classical, jazz and popular music.
