Tap the "OFF" switch on the Sound Check tab to turn on sound check. The switch should read "ON" and display a blue background to signify that the feature is turned on.
Tap the "EQ" tab, and then tap the equalizer setting you wish to set for your iPod. As of July 2010, there are 22 equalizer settings to choose from. The tab will have a checkmark next to the selected setting.
Press the "Home" button to return to the home screen. Tap the "Music" icon to test the new EQ and Sound Check settings. Repeat the above process if you are not satisfied with the settings.
Whether you've purchased music from the iTunes Store or imported music from a CD, the tracks in your music library are not equalized for the best sound quality during playback. The equalizer on your iPod allows you to adjust sound levels based on musical genre. The Sound Check feature on the iPod equalizes all tracks to the same volume to reduce the need to adjust your iPod's sound levels, whereas the Equalizer (EQ) adjusts the equalization to change the sound of your songs, according to Guy Hart-Davis, author of "How to Do Everything iPod & iTunes".
