Click "Go" at the top of the screen and select "Utilities" from the drop-down menu.
Double-click the "Disk Utility" icon and click the iPod tab in the sidebar located on the left side of the application window, and click the "Repair Disk" button. Once the disk repair is complete, click the "Erase" tab and click the "Erase" button.
Plug the wide end of the iPod USB cable into the bottom of your iPod, and plug the remaining end into your computer's USB port.
Although the iTunes program is the easiest way to erase your Apple iPod in order to clear its contents, you can also erase your iPod through your computer's "Finder" window on Macintosh computers or the "My Computer" window on a Windows PC. You should erase your iPod without the use of iTunes only if you have previously backed up your iPod's contents--a format erases all of the iPod's information and cannot be recovered from the device once it is erased. After the iPod is erased, you must use iTunes to restore the default factory settings to the device.
