My iPod Won't Show Up on My Desktop

My iPod Won't Show Up on My Desktop - Remove your iPod USB cable from its current port and move it to a different USB port. Over time, certain USB ports can fail to generate the same amount of power that they once did, leading to poor connections with peripherals.

Open your iTunes software, while your iPod remains connected to your computer and see if the iPod appears as an active device. Look in the left column, beneath the word "Devices," for a picture of an iPod. If it appears in this location, but not on your desktop, you most likely have a model that does not use disk mode, like an iPod Touch, Nano or Shuffle. This is normal behavior for these types of iPods, and you can still transfer content to your iPod using programs like iTunes, iPhoto and Image Capture.
Charge your battery. If your battery has absolutely no juice left, it may not appear on your desktop, even though you have the device plugged in to a power supply. Just leave it plugged in to charge for about two or three hours, disconnect it from the computer and try connecting again.

Restart your iPod. If the previous troubleshooting methods fail to solve the problem, you may have a frozen hard drive. To remedy this, turn on the iPod, flip the top "Hold" switch to the right (Lock) and then to the left (Unlock), and then press down the "Menu" and "Select" buttons for approximately 10 seconds until the device restarts. Then reconnect it to your computer.

Restart your computer while the iPod remains plugged into the USB port. As the computer reboots, it will search for available drives and may detect your iPod when it failed to do so before.

Your iPod should immediately appear as a device on your desktop if you use the device with a Macintosh computer. If the iPod fails to appear, this may indicate either a connection problem or a hardware problem. To narrow down the exact issue and possibly resolve it on your own, you should try a few basic troubleshooting techniques. If using an iPod on a Windows-based operating system, note that the iPod will not appear on your desktop by default.
