Flip the iPod over to the back. A fake iPod will not have the Apple logo imprinted in the iPod. A fake may say "Apple" or "iPod" on the back, but it will be obvious that it's not the real Apple logo.
Look at the USB connector slot at the bottom of the iPod. A real iPod has a long USB slot for a larger USB cord. Fake iPods will have a tiny USB slot used with the same USB cord that's used on digital cameras.
Look through the packaging that the iPod came in. A real iPod will be in an Apple box, with all of the cords and reading material properly--and neatly--packaged. Although you can purchased different cords, the cords that come with a real iPod will be white. A fake iPod will not be in an Apple box, the cords and reading materials will not be neatly packaged and the cords for the iPod will typically be black.
Check for an installation DVD. If your iPod came with an Apple and iTunes installation DVD it is a fake.
Unfortunately, a recent trend within the past decade or so has been fakes--or clones. Whether you're eyeing a new Louis Vuitton hand bag, a Gucci wallet or even an iPod, you have to be very cautious where you're buying your products. Retail stores would never sell cloned items; however, if you're looking to save a few dollars by purchasing a new iPod from eBay, Craigslist or a street vendor, make sure you know how to spot a fake.
