Replace an iPod Backlight

Replace an iPod Backlight - Place a soft cloth on a table. Place the iPod Nano face down on the soft cloth.

Insert the iPod opening tool into the seam between the front and back case at the upper left corner. Move the tool along the top to loosen the clips inside. Move the tool down the side of the iPod to loosen the clips inside. Move the tool along the bottom to loosen the bottom clips. Move the tool up the side of the iPod to loosen the side clips.
Pull the back case off the front case with your fingers. Place the back case aside for reassembly later.

Remove the six screws from the corners inside of the front case with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.

Insert the tip of the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver beneath the LCD panel at one corner. Lift up on the tip to loosen the panel from the clips holding it to the front case. Repeat this on the other corners.

The third generation iPod Nano, like all iPods, employ a backlight to illuminate the LCD display. Replacing a defective backlight requires a partial disassembly of the Nano. It should be noted that this procedure voids the Apple warranty. The procedure is straightforward and can save you the cost and time lost from taking it into a service center. An iPod opening tool and a replacement backlight can both be purchased from an electronics supply store.
