Press the Play/Pause button -- the center of the click wheel. This starts the shuffle on the first song in its list or the last song it was playing when the device was turned off.
Look at the top of the shuffle. Between the headphone jack and the power switch is another little switch. The oval side means the songs will play in order and the overlapping arrows mean the songs will shuffle randomly. Choose one based on whether you want to listen to songs ordered by artist and album or randomly.
Press the left and right sides of the click wheel (forward and backward arrows) to go back and forth in the song list.
The iPod shuffle is the most compact iPod to date and the only recent type without a screen. This lack of a screen makes maneuvering around the shuffle less intuitive. Once you figure out how to work your iPod shuffle, though, you'll be able to use it quickly and easily. The shuffle has a clip that easily clips onto the strap of a bag or a fold of clothing so you can use your iPod while exercising or while your hands are busy.
