View the iPod display screen to see if the battery is charging. The screen will display a battery icon that is filling up when the battery is charging. If you do not see this, the battery is likely not charging.
Attempt to turn the iPod on by holding down the "Power" button in the center of the circle. Even if the battery is not charged, the iPod should turn on while receiving power. If the iPod does not turn on, the USB cable, port or iPod is defective. Test the computer port by plugging in a different device, such as a digital camera, into the computer port and see if it powers on. Test the USB cable by using a different charging cable. If you have a working charging cable and working USB port, the iPod is not working correctly and should be taken to an Apple store for diagnosis and repair.
Allow the battery to charge for four hours if the iPod powered on in the previous step. Remove the iPod from the charging cord. Turn the iPod on. If the iPod still does not turn on, the battery needs to be replaced.
An Apple iPod is a portable music player that allows you to download music from CDs and the Internet onto the device to listen to wherever you go. An iPod is powered by a rechargeable battery. If the battery won't recharge, the device won't work. Unfortunately, the battery is not easy to replace and should only be done by an Apple professional. Attempting to replace the battery yourself can cause internal damage and void the manufacturer's warranty. Prior to having the battery replaced, you can troubleshoot and ensure the battery is the cause of the problem.
