Go to the iTunes Preferences. This is under the "iTunes" menu on a Mac or the "Edit" menu on a Windows PC. Select the "Devices" icon or tab and check the box next to "Prevent iPods and iPhones from syncing automatically." Alternatively, click on the "Music" tab of your device and uncheck the "Sync music" box.
Select new songs to put on your iPod by clicking on them in the iTunes Library. You can select ranges of songs by shift-clicking, or multiple songs by holding down the command key (control key on Windows) while you click on each song.
Drag the selected songs to the iPod icon in the left-hand pane of iTunes. The songs will be added without removing songs already on the IPod.
Apple's iTunes application has a lot of hidden preferences and settings that can make it frustrating to get your IPod to function the way you want it to. A common source of frustration among iPod users is the inability to change the music on their iTunes without having those changes transfer to their iPod during sync. Fortunately, there are a couple of quick and easy fixes to keep your iPod independent from changes made in iTunes.
