Open the iTunes software on your computer if it doesn't open on its own when you connect your iPod nano. Once your computer recognizes that your iPod is connected, an iPod icon will appear in the "Device" list, which is located on the left-hand side of the iTunes interface, below your iTunes Library.
Click on "File" at the top of the main window of the iTunes interface. Doing this will bring up a drop-down menu of commands.
Scroll down to and click on "Add to Library," which will open a search window that allows you to find MP3 and WMA files on your computer. Most music files are stored in the "Music" or "Documents" folders, although you may have different music locations based on how you set up your computer.
While the iPod nano is the brainchild of Apple, the company is smart enough to know that not everyone who owns one is willing or able to add music to their iPod that is only purchased through the iTunes Store. To that end, Apple has made its line of iPods capable of reading a number of different types of music files, including MP3s and protected AAC files--those downloaded through iTunes. Windows Media (WMA) files are not, however, one of those supported formats. WMA files can still be added to your iPod nano, but you'll need to use iTunes to convert the files first.
