Press and hold the "Menu" and "Center" button on your iPod Nano simultaneously for 6 seconds, until the iPod Nano shuts off, and the screen goes black.
Release the buttons once you see the Apple icon on the iPod's screen.
Insert the USB cable into the iPod Nano, and connect the other end of the cable to your computer's USB port.
Like most electronic equipment, the third-generation iPod Nano can sometimes freeze up for no apparent reason and require a manual restart in order to restore functionality.
