Troubleshoot a Jammed iPod

Troubleshoot a Jammed iPod - Make sure that the battery on you iPod is charged before you attempt any troubleshooting solutions. If the battery is drained, the device will likely not turn on at all.

Reset your iPod by first turning the Hold switch on and then off. Then hold down the Menu and Center buttons until you see an Apple logo on the screen. You might need to connect your iPod to a power source, such as an outlet or your computer, for this step to work.
Plug the iPod into a different USB port on your computer if you have found that one does not work. If possible, avoid the USB ports on the keyboard or hub. A jammed iPod might respond to one USB port differently than another.

Restart your computer and find out if your software is up to date. For Windows software, open Internet Explorer. From the Tools menu, select Windows Update. For Mac OS software, choose Software Update from the Apple menu.

Open iTunes and verify that you have downloaded the latest iPod software. To reinstall software, connect your iPod to the computer and open iTunes. Select your iPod once it appears and then check for updates. If your iPod already has the latest software and you are using the latest version of iTunes, proceed to the next step.

If you are like many other Apple iPod owners, you have probably discovered several uses for the device. Whether you listen while at the gym, riding the train, or walking to school, the iPod is useful only so long as it actually works. Outdated software, battery issues and hardware trauma might cause your iPod to jam or temporarily stop working. Fortunately, Apple offers a set of troubleshooting steps that can help you address and remedy iPod issues.
