Plug the other end of the cable into a USB port on your computer. If you've never used a USB port before, find it by matching the icon on the cable to the icon on your computer. The USB port will be the only one that matches the size of the connector on the cable. Again, if connector doesn't go in easily, flip the cable over. On a laptop the icon will be facing up.
Wait a moment for the computer to recognize the iPod touch. If it doesn't, let the iPod sit for 15 minutes to charge. In the meantime, download iTunes if you don't already have it; Apple has a free download of this application on its website. Once the iPod touch has had time to charge, unplug it and plug it in again.
Open iTunes, and after a moment your new iPod touch will appear in the left column. A dialog box will pop up asking how you want to handle your new device. Click "Sync" and wait while your new iPod touch takes all the music from your computer.
Getting a new iPod touch can be exciting, and as soon as you get it you're ready to start getting the most out of it. You can download content online, but to import your existing music library, you'll need to hook the device up to your computer. Don't worry if the computer doesn't recognize the iPod the first time you hook it up -- it may need to charge before it can "wake up" and be recognized.
