Launch the iTunes program by clicking "Start" > "All Applications" > "Music" > "iTunes."
Right-click on the icon of the iPod that is beneath the "Devices" tab in the left side of the iTunes program's main screen. Select "Restore" from the pop-up menu.
Click on the "Restore" button on the confirmation window that appears.
Wait as the iTunes program downloads and installs any additional software. Click the "Next" button when the text in the center of the window that has appeared says it is done.
Apple's iPod media player works on both Macs and PCs, although the operating system of each requires that the player be formatted for one or the other specifically. The iPod can be restored to work on a Windows-based PC by restoring it to the factory settings. This wipes it free of all data and fixes any disk errors that might be plaguing playback. No special software is needed other than the free iTunes software that is necessary for syncing with the iPod.
