Close (don't just minimize) the iTunes program if it's currently running. The iPod won't properly sync with Windows Media Player if iTunes is also open.
Use a different USB cord when attempting to sync the iPod with Windows Media Player. A bad USB cord keeps the computer from reading the device, which also prevents Windows Media Player from syncing with the iPod.
Reset the iPod. Doing so can fix several issues, including problems you're experiencing syncing the device with Windows Media Player. The method for resetting the iPod varies per model (see References).
Apple iPods are designed to automatically sync with the iTunes software on a Windows computer. These players are not compatible with other software programs, such as Windows Media Player. This does not mean that iTunes is your only choice for syncing an iPod with your computer.
