Turn off the Speaker on an iPod Nano

Turn off the Speaker on an iPod Nano - Switch on the Apple iPod Nano and play a track from the music library in the usual way.

Insert the headphone jack into the headphone socket firmly at the top of the device. This should immediately cut the output from the iPod Nano's internal speakers. If the music continues to play from the speakers then you might need to reinsert the headphones.
Remove the headphone jack from the socket and then push it back into the socket firmly. Check that the jack is fully inserted into the socket. Continue to unplug and then insert the headphone jack to clear any dirt or debris that might be blocking the headphone socket. If the problem persists, try resetting the iPod Nano.

Toggle the "Hold" switch on and off. Press and hold down the "Menu" and "Center" buttons at the same time. The Apple logo will appear on the Nano screen during the reset process.

The fifth generation of the Apple iPod Nano personal media player differs from earlier versions because it contains internal speakers so that you can play music without using an earphone or headphones. The iPod Nano automatically defaults to the internal speaker setting when you disconnect the headphones from the device. The only way to turn off the internal speakers while the iPod Nano is playing music or video is to firmly plug in the headphones. You might need to do this several times to clear debris and dirt from the headphone socket.
