Determine Whether An iPod Touch Update Is Needed - Power on your iPod Touch. To do this, click the power button located at the top right-hand corner of the iPod Tocuh.

Plug the iPod Touch into your computer. Plug the USB end into your USB port and the opposite end into your iPod Touch.
Open iTunes. Sometimes iTunes will automatically open when you plug in your iPod Touch, but if it does not, launch iTunes.

Click on the iPod Touch icon that appears in iTunes. It should appear on the left-hand navigation pane.



Click the "Check for update" button. This should appear in the middle of the main viewing screen of iTunes. If your firmware is up to date, it will read "This version of the iPod Touch software is up to date". If it is not up to date, you can download and install the newest version.

Determining whether you need a software or firmware update on your iPod Touch is an important process. Apple releases various updates through their firmware and software updates. These updates often will fix current technical problems that users commonly experience on their iPod Touch. Therefore, if you do not know whether you need to update your iPod Touch, or you do not know how to update the firmware, your iPod Touch may perform less than optimally.
