Download the most recent version of iTunes if it's not already on the computer, or open it. Click on your iPod in the iTunes menu bar on the left.
Click "Enable disk mode" under Options. This puts your 3rd generation iPod touch into disk mode.
Clear more space for storage by deleting unwanted songs and videos. Movies take up the most space, so just clearing your movies may clear up plenty of space for disk use.
The 3rd generation iPod touch holds 32 GB or 64 GB of songs, videos and other data. Once in disk mode, the iPod can be used as an external hard drive, making for a small and convenient portable hard drive. A 3rd generation iPod in disk mode will still perform all of its normal functions, such as playing music and video. When you plug in your iPod to a computer while in disk mode, you'll be able to double-click on the iPod on the desktop and view its contents like a flash drive or external hard drive. This switch to disk mode can be accomplished from any computer, either Mac or PC.
