Open the iTunes program and connect your 120 GB iPod to the computer via the USB cable. Your iPod should show up in the left column after a few seconds. Verify that the iPod shows "Connected" or "Do Not Disconnect" on the display. If it doesn't, you may need to reconnect the iPod while it is in disk mode.
Click on your iPod in the left column to bring up the summary information for your device. Click on the "Summary" tab in the main iTunes window.
Click the "Restore" button in order to restore the iPod software. Select the restore option that you prefer. You can restore the factory-installed software, the current software or update the software. Select the option that best suits your needs.
Apple iPods are programmed with software called firmware that runs the unit and organizes the files contained on it. From time to time, Apple releases new versions of the firmware to improve it. If the firmware ever becomes corrupted, you can reload it through a process that Apple calls "Restore." All you need to restore a 120 GB iPod is the newest version of the iTunes firmware.
