Squeeze the iPod so the back cover slides past the front cover, creating a lip that allows you to easily insert a wedge into the seam at the top left corner of the device.
Run the wedge all the way around the seam between the two sides of the iPod, gently prying it apart as you go. Once you've gotten around the iPod, the covers should be easy to take apart.
Separate the two sides and lay the front on its face to access the internal components.
The first version of the Apple iPod is one of the most robust MP3 players ever created. There's only one way to take it apart and it may require some force. But you can get the job done without having to pay a technician.
