Tell If iPod Is 5G or Later? - Read the model number near the bottom of the iPod, found on the metal backing of the device.

Check the numbers located next to the engraved "Serial Number" title. According to the official Apple site, the late fifth generation iPod has the following last three digits: X3N, WUC, WUB, WUA, WU9, V9S, V9Q, V9N, V9L,V9R, V9M, V9P or V9K.
Press the "Menu" button on the iPod's click wheel, and scroll down to "Settings." Push the "Center" button to view the Settings menu.

Highlight the "About" tab on the screen and push the "Center" button on the click wheel to view the serial number.



The late fifth-generation iPod, which is also known as the iPod video, was released in late 2006 and was one of the first iPods that supported video playback. While identical, the original fifth generation of the iPod was released in late 2005 with a smaller hard drive. If you're unsure about the generation of your iPod device, the model number printed on the device identifies the generation of your iPod. Alternately, the model number can also be found in the About section in your iPod's settings.
