Determine what generation iPod it is (see Resources).
Simultaneously press and hold the "Menu" and "Play/Pause" buttons, if the iPod is 3rd generation or older. Hold the buttons until the screen goes blank and then displays the Apple logo as it follows the iPod's start-up procedure.
Simultaneously press and hold the "Menu" and "Select" buttons, if the iPod is 4th generation or newer. Hold the buttons until the screen goes blank and then displays the Apple logo as it starts up again.
iPods fall prey to the same pitfalls as nearly all other electronic devices: they malfunction, they have glitches and they freeze, or "lock up," from time to time. If your iPod is frozen, you need to perform a reset to unlock it. If this does not solve the issue, consult Apple's technical care, or bring it to an Apple store to have it evaluated.
