Double-click on the icon of the QuickTime program to launch it. Drag the song you want to listen to on the iPod into the icon of the QuickTime program--the icon is on the desktop or in the Dock to the left or at the bottom of the screen. Wait for the audio window to appear on the screen.
Go to "File" and select "Save As" from the drop down menu. Name the song that will be converted into a iPod-compatible format in the empty column next to the "Save As" tab at the top of the window that has appeared.
Click the location tab at the center of the window. Select "Desktop" from the drop-down menu.
The iPod requires the iTunes program to sync to in order to put music on it from the hard drive. You can speed up the process by using the free QuickTime Player to convert a song into an iPod-compatible format first, rather than having to do it with iTunes. The iPod-compatible song can then be put into iTunes for use without any further conversions being necessary. You do not need any experience in audio editing to convert the song with the QuickTime program so that it can be transferred to the iPod.
