Insert the putty knife into the side of the iPod, between the front plastic shell and the back metal shell. Wiggle the putty knife between the two shells. Move the putty knife down the side of the iPod to release the latches holding the two shells together. Repeat this process on the other side of the iPod and on the top and bottom as well.
Place the iPod face down on the towel. Use your fingers to remove the back metal shell from the top plastic shell. Place the back metal shell aside.
Use your fingers to lift up on the battery from the side. Apply pressure to separate the battery from the adhesive holding it to the front plastic shell. Use the tweezers to remove the battery's cable from the connector on the top plastic shell. Discard the battery.
An iPod can last for many years, although the battery powering it is likely to fail much sooner. You can replace the battery in a 2GB iPod yourself and restore the music player to its full-powered potential. You can purchase the replacement battery from an iPod supply store, and no electronic skill is needed in order to swap it for the old battery. It should not take you more than half an hour to open the iPod and replace the battery.
