Perform a soft reset (if the "hold" button was not in the "on" position) by pressing the center button and the menu button simultaneously. Hold these buttons down for approximately 6 to 8 seconds. If this process is successful, the Apple logo will appear on the screen. The system will reboot, and all the files will be intact.
Connect the iPod to a computer through the USB connection, if the iPod does not respond to the soft reset. The battery may be too dead to allow the iPod to function. Allow the device to charge for several minutes before attempting to manipulate the device. Note that if the battery is completely dead, the computer will not register that the device is connected until the battery builds a charge.
Download the newest version of iTunes. If your device is responding fine but music won't transfer, update your iTunes application to the newest version, which can be found on the Apple website.
Update the firmware on your iPod. If your iPod is not performing as expected and you are able to connect it successfully to your PC, attempt to install new firmware by choosing "Check for Update." iTunes will scan your iPod to determine if new firmware is required.
iPods, though reliable personal audio devices, experience errors during the normal course of operation. Most of these errors can be corrected by manipulating the device through a series of simple key press procedures, while others may require a firmware update. In most cases, iPod errors can be corrected without the intervention of technicians or having to send the unit in for repair.
