Examine the status of your battery indicator. If green completely fills the icon, the battery is fully charged. Some iPods will also display "Charged" above the green battery.
Recognize the "Low Battery" indicator. When green has completed depleted from the battery icon, the icon will appear empty with a small amount of red at the far left of the indicator. Connect your device to a power source to charge it when the battery icon reaches this stage.
Estimate the charge left on your iPod when the battery indicator is between full and empty. For example, if the green in the battery icon is half full, your iPod is roughly half-way through its charge of eight to 12 hours. The time remaining will vary, depending on how you are using the device and what applications you are running.
According to the Apple website, the iPod battery indicator icon on your display screen is approximate. There is no way to tell precisely how much charge is left in an iPod. The website goes on to say that "when new and fully charged, the battery provides up to 8 or 12 hours of battery life, depending on your model." Armed with this knowledge and the battery indicator, you can determine roughly how much charge is left on your device.
