Insert the opening tool into the seam between the front and back casing of the iPod. Carefully work the tool around the perimeter of the iPod. You may need to pry it back and forth a bit to release the casing pieces from each other. Do not fully pull apart the two pieces yet.
Gently unplug the ribbon cable from the bottom left corner of the iPod. This must be done before pulling the iPod apart to avoid damaging the cable.
Pull the front and back pieces apart, and lay them flat on a clean, dry surface.
Apple in 2005 unveiled its 30-gigabyte iPod as part of its "5th Generation" line of iPods, which included an 80 gigabyte option. It had a battery rated for up to 20 hours of audio playback, the most for an iPod at the time. You may need to open an iPod for maintenance, battery replacement, screen replacement or just for general knowledge of the machine. With the proper tool, it's not complicated.
