Operate an iPod Shuffle

Operate an iPod Shuffle - Connect the iPod Shuffle to your computer. Because this is a different type of iPod, a standard USB iPod sync cable doesn't fit. Both versions of the Shuffle require a dock, so if you are missing it, buy one from a retailer or on eBay.

Decide whether you want iTunes to put music on the Shuffle randomly, you want to sync certain playlists or you want to manually manage your music. This is configured in the iTunes window, when you highlight the iPod Shuffle icon in the left-hand column.
Sync the iPod by clicking on the "Sync" button in the lower right corner of the iTunes window. Once the iPod is synced, eject it with the eject icon, which is the upward-pointing triangle to the right of the iPod icon in the left sidebar of iTunes.

Learn how to manipulate the scroll wheel on the iPod. The one difference is that there is no display, but otherwise, the function of the scroll wheel is similar to that of other iPods. The major difference is that on the Shuffle, the center button is the play/pause button. Volume up is 12 o'clock on the wheel, volume down is 6 o'clock, and one track forward and one track back are 3 and 9 o'clock respectively.

Set the shuffle setting to your preference. The "crossed arrows" mode is shuffle mode, which will play any tunes on the iPod in a random order. The "circled arrows" mode will play the tunes in the order they're in on the iPod (and your iTunes library). Needless to say, some functionality is absent due to the lack of a screen, namely the photos, contacts and calendar functions.

Apple's iPod Shuffle, introduced in early 2005, gave consumers a new twist on listening to music. The original iPod Shuffle, about the size of a pack of gum, was unique because it didn't feature a display. It was designed as a minimalist music player for the fitness set, but was also marketed as delivering an element of surprise: The user wouldn't know what songs were next on the playlist. Although the Shuffle also allowed users to play music in a predetermined order (by shutting off shuffle mode), the name belied the functionality. Apple has released a second-generation Shuffle, a diminutive player with either a 1GB or 2GB capacity.
