Press the "Center" and "Menu" buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appears. This may take six to 10 seconds. Make sure you are pressing the "Menu" button toward the outside of the click wheel. Then let go of the buttons and the iPod Nano 4G should be reset.
Charge the iPod Nano 4G to make sure a low battery isn't causing the problem. Connect it to the dock connector, then plug the connector into the power outlet. You can also connect the Nano to the computer using the USB sync cable to charge it. Make sure the computer is not set to go to sleep. After 30 to 60 minutes, the iPod Nano should be fully charged. Power the Nano on and see if it is working properly.
Some malfunctioning iPod Nano's will need to be restored completely, which will erase all data from the device, or have the firmware on the device reinstalled by iTunes. Before trying any of those methods, you should reset the iPod Nano. The Nano can be reset without the risk of losing files and the device will not have to be connected to iTunes to perform the procedure.
