Look at the small light on the iPod that flashes green and orange during different iPod functions. You'll find this on the iPod shuffle and some 1st and 2nd generation iPods. The light flashes green during charging, and turn a solid unblinking green when fully charged.
Check the battery status in iTunes if the iPod plugged into a computer. Click on your iPod of any type from the Devices list in iTunes. Depending on the age of the iPod, iTunes may show a message indicating that the iPod is fully charged or an icon next to the iPod's name indicating battery status.
iPods take a couple of hours to fully charge. Different iPods show their charge status in different ways, so every time you use a new iPod you may need to relearn this basic piece of information. It is safe for the iPod's battery to charge it only partially and disconnect it at any time in the charging process. To find out how long your battery will last once it's fully charged, check the documentation that came with your iPod or Apple's description of your device on its website.
