Open iTunes. If the program is not already installed on your system, access the Apple product page to obtain the program. (See Resource 2.) In the iTunes program menu, go to "File" and select "Add File to Library."
In the "Add To Library" file section window, access the MP4 or MOV file of your ripped DVD media. Double-click on the file name and the video will be added to the iTunes library.
Access your imported MP4 or MOV file by going to the "Movies" section under the "Library" tab. Right-click on the video and select the "Convert Selection for iPod/iPhone" option. The iTunes playback window will display the file conversion progress. When the conversion has finished, the generated M4V file will appear alongside the original MP4 or MOV file.
Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB dock connector. Once iTunes recognizes the device, it will sync it with the program's media library. The new M4V file will be uploaded to the iPod during this process. A dialog box will confirm when the sync has been completed.
In order to upload a DVD onto an iPod, the DVD must be ripped and its extracted video must be converted into an iPod-compatible format. iTunes, the media management program for the iPod, is capable of creating M4V versions of certain video files. Apple developed the M4V format using the MPEG-4 compression standard, the same publishing profile that produces MP4 files. Although it is closely related to the MP4 format, the M4V format is specialized for playback in iTunes and on the iPod. In addition to MP4, iTunes can generate M4V files from Apple's proprietary video compression format, MOV. Once the program performs this file conversion, iTunes can then be used to upload the MV4 video onto the device.
