Scroll down the menu options according to the generation of iPod you have. Select the fifth option for the fifth generation, fourth option for the fourth generation and third option for the third generation.
Select the third option from the bottom of the next menu to access the "Language Settings" menu. Select English from the list of languages.
Touch the "Settings" icon--denoted by a graphic of gears--from the home screen, and then touch the "Settings" icon on the menu that appears.
Whether by your own error (or someone else's practical joke), an iPod set to a language you don't understand can render it almost unusable. When the language setting on an iPod is changed, all iPod menus are displayed in that language. Returning the device to English can seem impossible with no points of reference, but you can navigate to the language menu based on keystrokes.
