Charge your battery. Disk Mode uses excessive battery power and requires a full charge to work properly. To charge, connect your iPod to your PC using the iPod USB cable, or plug the device into a wall socket using a wall charger. Because wall chargers do not come standard with the iPod, you will need to buy one separately in order to charge your battery in this manner.
Reset your iPod if you cannot exit Disk Mode. To reset, toggle the "Hold" switch to the "On" and then the "Off" position. Click and hold the "Menu" and "Select" buttons until the Apple icon appears. This should automatically return your iPod to its regular state.
Plug your iPod into your computer using the iPod USB cable, and open the iTunes software. In the left column of the iTunes browser, click the "iPod" icon and scroll down to the "Options" pane. Uncheck the box that reads "Enable Disk Use," and try resetting your iPod again.
The Apple iPod contains a hard drive that you can use to upload and transfer files between computers. To access the hard drive, put your iPod into Disk Mode, which allows you direct access to this hard drive. For click-wheel iPods, toggle the "Hold" switch to the "On" and "Off" position, then hold the "Menu" (top) and "Select" (center) buttons until the Apple logo appears. Finally, hold down the "Select" and "Play" buttons until the checkmark appears on the screen. Note that you cannot put the iPod Touch or Shuffle into Disk Mode. If you find that Disk Mode creates problems for you, consider some basic troubleshooting techniques.
