Attempt a "hard" reset. iPod Nano (6th Generation) owners should hold down the "Sleep/Wake" plus "Volume Down" buttons at the same time. All other iPod models require a two-step approach:
1. Toggle the hold switch on and then off again.
2. Press the "Menu" and center "Select buttons or the "Play/Pause" and "Menu" buttons (depending on your actual model) simultaneously.
Hold the button combination for approximately 8 to 15 seconds until you get an Apple logo.
Allow your iPod to reset itself and turn back on after you see the Apple logo.
Set up your iPod as a new device rather than from a backed-up file once it is restored. This prevents you from getting a white screen of death again if the problem was in your iPod's setup.
If you notice that your iPod screen has turned white and is completely unresponsive you can unfortunately assume it is a software issue. (If you've damaged your iPod, it's a hardware issue that most likely cannot be fixed.) Sometimes the iPod just freezes up -- much like a computer -- and you have reset it to get it working properly again. If your iPod ends up with the "white screen of death," try a hard reset to see if that fixes the problem.
