Connect the iPod to the computer using the USB cable included with the device. iPods use a custom connection port and will not operate with standard USB cables. iTunes will detect the connected iPod and open automatically.
Name the iPod and follow the on-screen instructions to set up how the device will synchronize with Vista. iTunes supports both automatic and manual syncing. If the iPod has setup data from a previous computer, it will retain those settings rather than prompt you for a new configuration.
Add media to iTunes. iTunes can only transfer music, videos and other media to an iPod after the media has been added to the iTunes library. Add media already stored on the Vista system by pressing "Ctl" + "O" and navigating to the files. iTunes can also rip media from an inserted disc and will prompt the copying process after detecting a music CD. The iTunes store allows you to purchase and download new music, videos and apps directly into the iTunes library.
Apple's iPod portable media players communicate with computer systems to transfer music files and other media. In order to work with a Windows Vista system, the iPod requires compatible music-management software. Apple's official iTunes software works on Vista computers and downloads for free from Apple's website.
