Connect your iPod to the computer with the Apple USB cord. Plug the small USB end into an available USB slot on the computer, and plug the larger end into the bottom of your iPod. Your iPod will appear in the "Source" panel on the left side of the iTunes window.
Click your iPod in the "Source" panel. Click the "Restore" button. Click "OK" to confirm your decision. ITunes will alert you when stage one of the restore process is completed, and will ask you to either leave the iPod connected to the computer or disconnect the iPod and connect it to the power adapter, depending on your model. You will generally have to disconnect the iPod if you are using an older iPod model, according to Apple. Ensure that the power adapter is connected into a wall outlet. Stage two of the restore process begins when the "Apple" logo appears on the iPod. A status bar will alert you when stage two is complete.
Connect the iPod into your computer after stage two is complete, if you had to remove it. The iTunes "Setup Assistant" window will appear; the "Setup assistant" will automatically appear when stage two is complete if you left your iPod connected to the computer.
Your iPod may contain hundreds of dollars' worth of songs, so it's a sickening feeling when you realize you have to restore your iPod to factory settings because of a problem with the iPod. You can restore all of your songs and videos, however, as long as you kept them in your iTunes library, so there's no need to worry about losing all of your data. You can restore any iPod to factory settings by using the iTunes software.
