Update Apple iPod Shuffle Software - Open iTunes on your computer by clicking "Go" at the top of your Macintosh screen, and click the "Applications" tab from the drop-down menu. Double-click "iTunes" to run the application. For Windows PCs, select "Start" in the lower-left corner of the screen and click "All Programs," "Apple" and "iTunes."

Plug the iPod Shuffle's USB cable into the USB port on your computer, and plug the other end into the iPod Shuffle's headphone port.
Right-click the "iPod Shuffle" tab in the iTunes sources list, and select "Back up" from the pop-up menu.

Click the "Check for Update" button in the main iTunes window to scan for software updates, and click "Update Now" on the dialog box to download the update.

Leave the iPod Shuffle connected to the computer until the update completes, and click the "Eject" icon on the iPod Shuffle tab to disconnect it.

The firmware on your iPod Shuffle will need to be updated as Apple continues to release periodic updates for the product, which often corrects bugs or other errors found in the iPod Shuffle's previous firmware. Updating your iPod Shuffle requires having the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer, as well as connecting your iPod Shuffle to the computer. Before installing firmware be sure to back up your iPod Shuffle, as firmware updates may cause data loss if an error occurs during the process.
