Click the iTunes button located on the dock of your Macintosh's screen to open the application. For PCs, click the "Start" or "Windows" icon in the lower-left corner of the screen and click "All Programs" and "iTunes" in the menu.
Click "Help" at the top of the iTunes menu on your PC and click "Check for Updates" from the pull-down menu. On a Macintosh computer, click "iTunes" at the top of the screen and click "Check for Updates" on the pull-down menu.
Although iPod firmware updates assist in ensuring your iPod is up to date and won't conflict with iTunes and other types of software, an error during the upgrade process can result in a loss of your iPod's music, photos and more. To prevent this, the iTunes program backs up your iPod's latest content and recommends you back up before installing a firmware update. In the event your iPod's hard disk is erased or requires a restoration due to an installation problem, the backup is stored on your computer's hard drive and can be accessed in iTunes.
