Format an Apple iPod

Format an Apple iPod - Connect your iPod to your Mac or PC using the connector cable. If iTunes does not launch automatically, open it. Wait for iTunes to recognize the iPod.

Highlight the iPod, identified by name, in the "Devices" section in the left sidebar. Note the format of the iPod. If the format is the desired format, you need not take any further actions.
Press the "Restore" button in order to reformat the iPod. You will be warned that this process will erase all songs, videos and other media on the iPod. If you're sure you want to proceed, click "Restore" again.

Copy media files back to your reformatted iPod and change any other settings that were erased during the restore process. If desired, sync your iPod.

There are several reasons why you might want to format or reformat an iPod. If you have a Windows PC, you will have to format your iPod in order for you to be able to load music, videos and movies on it. If you have a Mac, you may want to reformat your iPod so that it is Mac-native and saves space. While a Windows-formatted iPod can be used on both a Mac and PC, the Mac-formatted iPod can only be viewed on a Mac. If you're using your iPod with a Mac and PC, then, you'll want to reformat it so that it can be used with both devices.
