Go to the left column in iTunes and click on the name of your iPod in the "Devices" list. Go to the "Summary" tab at the top. This will take you to a screen that contains the general information about your iPod, such as size, name and available options.
Select the check box that allows you to manually manage music. You will see that this automatically also selects the option to enable disk use. If you still want your iPod to sync your music library when you connect it to your PC, then leave this option unchecked and only chose "Enable Disk Use."
Locate the iPod in your Finder and on the desktop on a Mac, or in the "My Computer" folder on a PC. Copy the files you want to transfer and paste them into a folder on your iPod. Look at the Summary tab again in iTunes; there will now be a slight change to the capacity bar at the bottom of that tab. Check the amount of storage on the "Capacity" bar at the bottom to see how much space is available.
An iPod is a handy device that lets you take your digital music collection everywhere, but it can also act as a storage device, meaning you can use it as a jump drive or external hard drive to transfer files between computers. It only takes a minimal amount of preparation to use your iPod as a storage device, and the preparation does not require any extra software other than iTunes, which can be downloaded for free from the Apple website.
