Use the magnifying glass if necessary to locate the serial number of the iPod. Navigate to support.apple.com and click on "Tech Specs." Enter the serial number in Apple's Tech Specs search box and press "Enter." If an iPod pops up with details about generation and size that match with what you see on your iPod, it's legit. Sometimes with used iPods the serial number is partially rubbed off, so you won't be able to use this method.
Turn on the iPod and watch the opening screen. You see only an Apple logo, not a fancy video or any words, on a real iPod.
Scroll through the iPod's settings and features for anything extra that isn't advertised with a regular iPod. This could include e-book reading, texting, phone calls, or Bluetooth; only iPod touches have Bluetooth built in.
You purchased your iPod from a source other than Apple, and now you're wondering if your iPod is legit. The easiest way is to compare it to another iPod of the same type -- shuffle, nano, touch, or classic -- but in lieu of that there are other ways you can tell. In the event that you find your iPod isn't legit, try to return it for a full refund.
