Connect the iPod to your Windows PC with the USB or FireWire cable that came with the iPod. After a few moments, your iPod should appear in the iTunes Source panel.
Select your iPod in the Source panel. Information about the iPod will appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes window.
Click "Restore." You should see a progress bar on the computer screen showing the advancement of this part of the process. When this stage is complete, iTunes will give you further instructions, depending on the iPod model you're restoring.
Microsoft developed FAT32, the most recent version of the FAT, or file allocation table, file system, to accommodate the ever-increasing size of hard disk drives. Because the iPod is essentially a portable hard disk, when it's configured for Windows, it uses the FAT32 system. When it's configured for a Mac, it uses the Mac OS Extended, or HFS Plus, system. No matter which system you choose for your iPod, you can always restore it to FAT32 with a Windows PC. Keep in mind, however, that when you restore your iPod, all data on it will be erased.
