Run your thumbnail along the seam of the iPod. Insert the small wedge into the seam and gently wiggle it up and down until the front and back of the iPod separates.
Set the iPod down on a table with the face up.
Lift up on the front of the iPod. You will see that the iPod front and back are still connected via two ribbons. One runs to the battery and the other to other hardware. Follow the battery ribbon that lays over the large, square hard drive and using the small flat head screwdriver, lift up on the tab that is securing it in place. Now you can flip over the hard drive for access to other parts.
