Connect your iPod to the computer with the iPod Dock Connector to USB 2.0 cable. When this is connected and your computer recognizes your iPod, iTunes will automatically open.
Select "iPod" in the device list on your iTunes screen. It will say "iPod nano," "iPod classic" or another iPod version, depending upon the model you have.
Click on the "Summary" tab, which will tell you if you need to update the iPod's software version. It will give you the option to update the software version, or to restore the iPod to its original settings.
