Troubleshoot My iPod 2nd Gen - Plug the wide, flat end of the FireWire cable into the bottom of the iPod, and plug the other end into the iPod power adapter. Plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet to allow it to charge.

Slide the switch on top of the iPod to the right and to the left to switch the device's hold feature on and off, respectively.
Hold the "Play" and "Menu" buttons at the same time until the device shuts off and resets itself. According to Apple, the Apple logo will appear on the screen when it resets.

Remove the cable from the iPod's power adapter, and plug the cable into your PC or Mac's USB port.



Run the iTunes program, and click the "iPod" icon in the program's sidebar. Click "Check for Update" to access any new software updates for the iPod, and click "Download and Install" if updates are available.

If your iPod's information becomes corrupted, you may need to perform a device restore.
