Burn a CD Onto an iPod

Burn a CD Onto an iPod - Download and install Apple iTunes, the official software for use with the iPod, if you use Windows. If you use a Mac, the software is probably already installed. You'll find a link to download it in the resources section of this article. Save the installer file to your hard drive, open it and follow the steps in the Setup Wizard. Open iTunes when you are finished.

Insert the CD you'd like to listen to on your iPod into your computer. A new dialogue box will ask you if you want to import your CD to your library. Click on "Yes" and the process will begin. You can see a progress bar at the top of the screen move along as each song on the disc is ripped to your hard drive.
Connect your iPod to your computer via the USB cable that came in the iPod box. If this is your first time doing so, iTunes will guide you through a set-up process and ask you to name your device.

Create a playlist containing the songs from the CD you just ripped. Click the "Add Playlist" button, which looks like a grey plus sign in the lower left-hand corner of iTunes. Type in a name for your playlist such as "my mix". Now click on "Music" in the left-hand bar. Highlight the songs from your CD by dragging a box around them with your mouse. Drag them on top of your "my mix" playlist and drop them.

Place the "my mix" playlist on your iPod by clicking on it and dragging it on top of your iPod icon in the left-hand menu. A progress bar will display at the top of the screen as the files are placed on to your iPod.

Transferring your CD collection to your iPod is likely one of the first things you'll do after first buying the portable music player. Doing so is easy--all you need is a computer and Apple's iTunes software, which is designed to work with iPods. From there it's a matter of inserting your CDs into your computer's disc drive and letting iTunes do the work. You may never need to take your CDs out of their cases again. Mac users likely already have iTunes installed, and Windows users just need to make a quick download.
