Load iTunes. When the iPod is securely mounted on the computer, iTunes will open, revealing not only your playlists but also the iPod icon on the left menu bar. Click on the iPod icon to go to the iPod summary page, where you will see the status of your iPod in terms of the music it holds and space it still has.
Stay on the summary page. After clicking iTunes, click on your iPod on the left bar menu. A prompt will pop-up, then click restore. Clicking on restore will erase all your files. Restoring will bring your iPod back to its original state.
Update your iPod. To make your iPod up-to-date as possible, make sure to update it with the current software. You can do this by clicking on the iTunes menu on iTunes and clicking "Check for updates." iTunes will sometimes download software updates, but make sure that before selling your iPod or putting new music, you have the most recent software update as possible.
There may be times when you need to delete everything from your iPod, either for selling or just to clean out your music player. Deleting everything manually may seemingly remove everything from your iPod, but the process may retain some files in your iPod that you don't want to keep. Knowing how to truly delete everything from your iPod so it looks as good as new is beneficial.
