Take your iPod in your hand so that the screen is facing you with the click wheel on top. Take your flat tool or small flathead driver and work it into the tiny crack between the front cover and the back cover.
Push it in until the crack becomes larger. When you hear a slight pop, stop pushing and start twisting slightly to pry the two pieces apart.
Grasp the iPod covers from both sides and gently pull them apart.
Unlike many small computers and electronic gadgets, Apple's iPods are not designed to be easily opened and serviced. The components of the fifth generation iPod, including the hard drive and battery, are sealed within the machine. But instead of sending the iPod back to Apple to be fixed, many people prefer to open it and service the iPod themselves. Once you open your iPod, you can fix certain problems with the iPod, upgrade the hard drive or replace the battery.
