ITunes, like other media players, is not immune to issues and problems -- not starting properly, not recognizing your iPod or shutting down without warning when connecting a device to your computer. The issues and problems are related to the Apple Mobile Device Service not being started and working properly. The Apple Mobile Device Service must be running before your iPod and related devices can work with your Windows or Mac version of iTunes. You can start the service so iTunes can access your iPod/related device.
