Upgrade Your Memory on Your iPod

Upgrade Your Memory on Your iPod - Hold down the “Play” button until the iPod turns off completely. Slide the “Hold” button to the right to lock the device. This will prevent the iPod from turning on during the upgrade process.

Insert the flathead tool in between the front and rear cover of the iPod. Be gentle while inserting the tip of the tool as there are a few wires that can be damaged. Twist the tool slightly to release the front from the rear cover of the iPod.
Fold the rear cover over like a book. You will see the hard drive with a blue rubber covering. Disconnect the wire that connects the hard drive to the iPod motherboard. Slowly remove the iPod hard drive and remove the rubber covering from the hard drive.

Place the rubber cover around the new iPod hard drive and connect it to the iPod motherboard. Place the hard drive back into the iPod casing and close the covering like a book.

Connect the iPod to your computer and open iTunes. Click “Restore” and your new iPod hard drive will be reformatted with the iPod operating system.

The original Apple iPod came with a respectable 5GB of storage. That is the equivalent to about 2,200 songs. The most recent iPod model can hold roughly 80,000 songs. Upgrading your Apple iPod’s storage memory is a delicate process because of the many mechanical parts inside the iPod. Apple does not recommend doing this, and has gone to such measures as voiding your warranty if you do attempt to do it. If you do decide to go through with the upgrade, you will first need to purchase a new 1.8” hard drive. These are the hard drives that are used in the iPod and now go up to 240GB.
